What to do after a storm...

1. Stay Safe: Don’t assume power lines are dead. If a tree fell on your house stay away from it & call the power company.

2. Call Insurance Company: Report all damage to your insurance company as soon as possible to settle your claim more quickly & accurately.

3. Prevent Further Damage: Protect your home from further damage & theft with temporary repairs. Place plywood, tarps & other materials over openings in roofs, walls & windows & keep receipts so you can submit them to your insurance company later.

4. Be Prepared: Prepare as much information you can about the damage - structural & your possessions. Take pictures & make a list of everything you want to show the adjuster.
5. Call Creditors: Notify any creditors of lost bill or if you are unable to pay. If your home is uninhabitable ask your utility company to stop billing you.

6. Find Your Policies: Gather your homeowner's or renter's policy to prepare to file. Talk to your agent about what to do next.

7. Find A Reputable Contractor: Take special care when choosing your contractor; check credentials with your local Better Business Bureau, inspect licenses & liability insurance.
